[Sri Dasavatara Stotram] Incarnations of the Supreme Lord: avatārā hy asaṅkhyeyā hareḥ sattva-nidher dvijāḥ yathāvidāsinaḥ kulyāḥ sarasaḥ syuḥ sahasraśaḥ [SB 1.3.26]

Lord Hari has innumerable incarnations. Nobody can count Him, innumerable. As innumerable outlets come out from a very big reservoir, similarly innumerable incarnations come about from the Supreme Lord, and Lord Vāmanadev is one of His incarnations. Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa comes, Himself comes, and His incarnations also come to this material world to fulfill certain purposes. There are two types of purposes of the Lord's coming. Isn't it?

Bhagavad Gītā says: yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge [BG 4.7-8]

This is one of the purposes. To kill the miscreants, demons. Those who are breaking the principles of Bhāgavata-dharma, creating disturbances, persecuting the devotees. So, Supreme Lord is very dear to the devotees, bhakta-vatsala, comes to kill those miscreants, protect the devotees and give pleasure to the devotees, and establish again Bhāgavata-dharma, dharma-saṁsthāpana. This is one of the purposes.

This is a secondary purpose, gauṇa purpose, uddeśya. This is not the chief purpose. There are two types of purposes, chief and secondary—mukhya, gauṇa. Other words, internal and external: antaraṅga-kāraṇa, bahiraṅga-kāraṇa. Two types of purposes are always there. One is the external cause; another is the internal cause. So this is what I say, the Gītā says this is the external cause. This is not the internal cause. External cause relates to others, to the jīvas. Internal cause relates to Himself, to the Lord. Chief cause, mukhya-kāraṇa.

Internal cause is, He Himself will get pleasure thereby and relish His pastimes. That is the internal cause, it relates to Himself. There's two types of causes. So Vāmanadev, one of the incarnations of the Lord, comes to fulfill such two types of causes also. And today is that auspicious day when Lord Vāmanadev appears, so we, the devotees and Vaiṣṇavas, we observe this day. This is an auspicious holy day, so we should remember and glorify the Lord, and also do śravaṇa-kīrtana, hearing and chanting of the glories of the Lord on this day. Thereby the Lord will be pleased, and we will ka also be pleased. That's why we observe these days, and on this day we do this thing, and this should be done.

He appeared as the son of Kaśyapa and Aditi. In the Eighth Canto, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, there is a little description about it. Aditi Devī had a desire to get the Lord as her son, so she observed one vrata named Payo-vrata for twelve days. Very strictly observing the principles of that vrata, she observed that vrata. So the Lord became very much pleased with her, with the vrata, and He appeared before her with a four-handed form, before Aditi. Then Aditi paid daṇḍavat-praṇām obeisances to the Lord. And the Lord said, ‘I’m very much pleased with your worship, vrata, vow, and I will come as your son. I will appear as your son.’ Hmm.

Similarly, Kaśyapa Muni had also undergone very severe tapasya, penance, to get the Lord as his son. And the Lord was also pleased with the penance of Kaśyapa Muni. Then the Lord told Aditi, that verse is there in the Eighth Canto: upadhāva patiṁ bhadre prajāpatim akalmaṣam māṁ ca bhāvayatī patyāv evaṁ rūpam avasthitam [SB 8.17.19]

That means the Lord said to Aditi, ‘You should always meditate and think like this, that I am there in the body of your husband, Kaśyapa Muni. Your husband, Kaśyapa Muni, is a sinless person, niṣpāpa. You go and worship your husband, meditating on Me, thinking on Me that I am there in the body of your husband.’ Then He disappeared. Saying this, He disappeared.

So, Aditi carried out the orders of the Lord. From that day, she was engaged in worshiping her husband, Kaśyapa Muni, in that way. Kaśyapa Muni in trance could see that the Lord had appeared in his body. Then Kaśyapa Muni gave semen in the womb of his wife, Aditi. So, in this way, Lord Vāmanadev was there in the womb of Aditi Devī, and Lord Brahmā could understand this thing. So Lord Brahmā came there to the hermitage of Kaśyapa Muni and offered prayers to the Lord in the womb of Aditi. Then heard Brahmā's prayer that is there in the Eighth Canto: jayorugāya bhagavann urukrama namo ’stu te namo brahmaṇya-devāya tri-guṇāya namo namaḥ namas te pṛśni-garbhāya veda-garbhāya vedhase tri-nābhāya tri-pṛṣṭhāya śipi-viṣṭāya viṣṇave [ŚB 8.17.25-26]

Supreme Lord, all are glorifying You. Your pastimes, activities are very, very wonderful, inconceivable. You are the controller of the material nature. Again and again, I am paying my obeisances to You. You are all-pervaded. As the all-pervaded Supersoul, You are there in the heart of all living entities. The three planetary systems are there at Your divine navel. Still, You are transcendental to these three worlds. In the past, You appeared in the womb of Pṛśni. O Supreme Creator, You are only understood through Vedic knowledge. I offer my obeisances again and again.

In this way, Brahmā-ji offered many prayers. That is there, you find in the Eighth Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. śrī-śuka uvāca itthaṁ viriñca-stuta-karma-vīryaḥ prādurbabhūvāmṛta-bhūr adityām catur-bhujaḥ śaṅkha-gadābja-cakraḥ piśaṅga-vāsā nalināyatekṣaṇaḥ [SB 8.18.1]

So, Śuka Gosvāmī says, itthaṁ viriñca-stuta-karma-vīryaḥ prādurbabhūvāmṛta-bhūr adityām catur-bhujaḥ śaṅkha-gadābja-cakraḥ piśaṅga-vāsā nalināyatekṣaṇaḥ. So after, when Brahmā finished his prayers, then the Supreme Lord came out from the womb of Aditi with a four-handed form, the Viṣṇu form, śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma. Holding śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma, you know it. I don't speak in English. And He had put on a yellow garment, pīta vastra. His two eyes were like a completely blossoming lotus flower. Resembling like that. His bodily complexion is pure bluish, śuddha-śyāma. In His two ears, two dazzling earrings were decorated. On His chest, there is śrīvatsa-cihna. And in different limbs of His body, He had put on different ornaments. And on the head, there's a dazzling crown. And on the waist, there is a belt, mekhalā. And on the shoulder, there is this sacred thread, yajñopavīta.

And in the feet, there is tinkling, nūpura. All these ornaments were there. And He had also decorated with a very nice flower garland. A very nice scent was coming out from it, many bumblebees are whirling round about to collect some honey from it. And from His divine body a divine effulgence was coming out. That effulgence; the darkness, all darkness that was inside the room of Kaśyapa, was completely dispersed. He became so effulgent. Throughout the world, throughout the whole universe, there was all sorts of joyfulness, cheerfulness, delightfulness. All the demigods, cows, brāhmaṇas, Vaiṣṇavas, hills, mountains, rivers, lakes. Everywhere! Only joyousness was there.

And this is the day, this is the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Śrāvaṇa. Lord appeared at midday, just at noon, 12 o'clock, dvādaśī. And so this dvādaśī, this tithi is known as Vijayā-dvādaśī. Varieties of musical instruments were vibrated like the conch shell, mṛdaṅgam, drum, bugle, kettle drums—yes, kettle drums. Kettle drums, different varieties of these musical instruments were vibrated. Apsarās in the heaven, they began dancing. The Gandharvas began singing. Siddhas, Vidyādharas, Kimpuruṣas, Kinnaras, Sāraṇas, Yakṣas. All. And Siddhas, Rākṣasas, Suparṇas, all the demigods. They all offered prayers unto the Supreme Lord, and also all showered flowers unto the house of Aditi and Kaśyapa.

When Aditi Devī saw the Supreme Lord has appeared with His divine body and is standing before her, she was simultaneously joyful and amazed. And Prajāpati Kaśyapa also became very much amazed and joyful. So the Lord appeared with His own form, śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma, four-handed form. And immediately as a stage actor, He transformed Himself into a dwarf. Dwarf. Just little, like this. Dwarf brahmacārī. Dwarf brahmacārī, vaṭu-brāhmaṇa. Vaṭu means brahmacārī. He appeared in the four-handed Viṣṇu form, but immediately after this, He transformed Himself, like a stage actor, appeared as a dwarf brahmacārī, vaṭu-brāhmaṇa.

So when our maharṣis saw, great rishis, sages saw that the Lord appeared as a vaṭu-brāhmaṇa, brahmacārī dwarf, they became very much joyful. Then they asked Prajāpati Kaśyapa to perform jāta-saṁskāra, the Vedic ritualistic ceremony to be performed after birth. So that ceremony was performed, and there was upanayana also. Brahmacārī means upanayana-dīkṣā. Everything was performed. At that time of initiation, upanayana, Sūryadev gave Him the mantra. Sūryadev gave Him the mantra. And Bṛhaspati gave Him this yajña-sūtra, the sacred thread. And Kaśyapa gave Him this belt of mekhalā. And Mother Earth gave that deer skin. Deer skin to put on. And Aditi Devī gave Him a kaupīna to put on. And the sky gave Him an umbrella.

And at that time, Brahmā washed the two lotus feet of the Lord with water in his water pot. That is Ganges water. And Sarasvatī Devī gave Him one garland, that is akṣa-mālā. Kubera gave Him a begging bowl. A brahmacārī will go and beg bhikṣā, so a bowl is required, a begging bowl. And Bhavānī, Pārvatī Devī first gave Him bhikṣā.

So at that time, the great demoniac king, Bali Mahārāja, was performing aśvamedha-yajña, horse sacrifice. He was performing a horse sacrifice at that very time with the brāhmaṇas, by the brāhmaṇas, Bhṛgu-vaṁśīya. Brāhmaṇas were born in the Bhṛgu Dynasty. Those brāhmaṇas were performing that horse sacrifice, Bali Mahārāja. And Bali Mahārāja was noted for his charity. A very charitable person. Nobody is refused. Whatever one begs, he gives. So Vāmanadeva heard this glory of Bali Mahārāja, then He thought of, ‘I'll go to the sacrificial arena of Bali Mahārāja and get some charity from him.’

So He started going. He was a dwarf, I say. He's a dwarf, just this high. Dwarf. Little feet, little hands, all this, all small. And brahmacārī, this vaṭu brahmacārī, and had carried an umbrella, you see. Umbrella was given by whom? Sky. And that was a palm leaf umbrella. Not this cloth umbrella. Palm leaf umbrella. And a very big umbrella. Very big umbrella and dwarf Vāman. So His, that dwarf Vāman was completely covered up with the umbrella. Completely covered up with the umbrella, a big umbrella. When He was going many brāhmaṇas were also going to the sacrificial arena of Bali Mahārāja to get charity also. Brāhmaṇas also received charity, because Bali Mahārāja was giving profuse charity. Whatever one begs, he gives. Freely. Nobody is refused. So many brāhmaṇas are going also, and this vaṭu Vāman, Vāmanadev is also going.

The brāhmaṇas say, so some, one umbrella is moving. In their front, one umbrella is moving very swiftly. They saw, ‘Wow! What is this? Wonderful! One umbrella is moving?’ They couldn't understand that Vāmanadev was there, because Vāmanadev was completely covered with the umbrella. So an umbrella was moving, and so swiftly moving. So brāhmaṇas asked, ‘Who is that umbrella? Let us see.’ But when they came close, they saw there was nothing. Vāmanadev disappeared immediately. Then after a few years, then again Vāmanadev appeared. This again, that umbrella is again moving in front of them. ‘Oh, what is this? Wonderful. Again that umbrella is moving.’ This is there.

So anyhow, in this way, Vāmanadev reached the sacrificial arena of Bali Mahārāja, moving, and then He reached the sacrificial arena of Bali Mahārāja. So all the brāhmaṇas there, and Bali Mahārāja himself also, seeing such a brahmacārī, an effulgent brahmacārī, couldn't understand who was He. So there was a debate between them. Some say, ‘Sūryadev himself has come here.’ He was so effulgent. This some debate was there.

Anyhow, then Vāmanadev, Bali Mahārāja washed the feet of Vāmanadev and gave Him a nice seat to sit on and offered worship also. That is etiquette. And also He took that water, feet-washing water of Vāmanadev and put on his head. And Śivaji also, present there are demigods. Śivaji put some of the water on his head also. That feet-washing water of Vāmanadev, because that's all auspicious. Mm.

Then Bali Mahārāja said, ‘Oh, brahmacārī, brāhmaṇa, I pay my obeisances to You. All You, are coming to this place is pleasing. You have not faced any difficulty, I think so. And I think You are the embodiment of all the tapasyas of all the brahmarṣis. You look like that. As You have now come to my house, all my house with my ancestral house has become purified. And I think You have come here to get something from me, because You are a poor brāhmaṇa. You need something. All right. I am prepared to give anything, what You like. I can give You cattle, gold and all household paraphernalia, all sorts of food grains. And also, if You need to marry, I'll give a beautiful brāhmaṇa girl to You for marriage. And also, I will give You some wealthy part of my kingdom. Horses, elephants, chariots I may also give You. If You want, whatever You want, You ask for, I'll give You.’

But Vāmanadev said, ‘What I need, I only ask for that thing. I don't need anything more than that. If someone is a greedy person, he takes more than his need, thereby he commits sin. I don't want. I need only three pieces of land from you. Only three pieces, on My feet, little pieces. Nothing more than that.’

And also, He glorified, He spoke highly of him, ‘Bali Mahārāja, you are the son of Virocana and grandson of Prahlāda Mahārāja. So, you are born in such a highly glorified family. Your grandfather, Prahlāda Mahārāja, such a devotee, great devotee, and very magnanimous heart. And your father was also like that. And in our dynasty no such persons were born who were very narrow-minded. They're not narrow-minded. Very broad-minded. And you are like that. And I'm very happy to hear your words, but I want only three pieces of land from you, nothing else. Please give me.’ Mm.

Then Bali Mahārāja said, ‘I think You have no intelligence. You are a poor brāhmaṇa. You need much wealth, landed property, everything. And when you only ask for three pieces of land? I think you are devoid of intelligence.’ He said that. ‘What is this? You will get something from me, then you will approach another person to get something from him. No, that should not be. Why do you approach another person? I will fulfill all those desires. You need not go to any other person. Only you beg for three pieces, this small patch of land, this small piece. Very small piece.’ He said like that.

But Vāmanadev said, ‘O King, this is what I need and I will be very much satisfied with it. I don't need anything else than this.’ Then Bali Mahārāja says, ‘Alright, whatever You like I will give You.’ Then he prepared himself to give Him the charity.

At that time, his guru Śukrācārya came and interfered. Śukrācārya interfered, isn't it? Śukrācārya said, ‘You don't know. He's not a dwarf. He is Bhagavān Viṣṇu. He has assumed this form; this is a pretentious form. You should understand, He is Bhagavān Viṣṇu. He has come to take all of your wealth, everything from you. All your name, fame, prestige, wealth, strength, everything He will take away, and give it to Indra. You will become a pauper. How can you earn your livelihood? How can you maintain when you will be devoid of everything? You will become pauper. You should understand this thing.’

‘He's not a brahmacārī, dwarf brahmacārī. He is Bhagavān Viṣṇu. You should understand. He is the son of Kaśyapa and Aditi.’ Because Śukrācārya knows this thing, Śukrācārya knows this thing.

‘And He will expand Himself unlimitedly. Don't think that He is just a little dwarf and small, little feet He have. No. He will expand Himself unlimitedly. With one foot, He will cover all space in this universe. The other, second foot will cover the whole, you see, sky, space, antarikṣa. All land here in one space, one foot. And with other foot, He will cover the whole space. And you, you would have nothing to give for the third space. You think of this thing.’

‘I know, I know,’ he says this thing. But Bali Mahārāja has already given words. Then Bali Mahārāja said, ‘I have already given words. How I only speak lie? I will be liar, then will I go to hell.’

But this Śukrācārya said, ‘Yes, there are some instances where lies should be spoken. What is? Now, if you want to capture, enchant a woman, you should speak lie. And also, if you cut jokes with somebody, then you should speak lies. That is allowed. And in marriage negotiations, some lies should be spoken also. There is no harm in it. He says, ‘Some lies should be spoken, there's no harm in it. And if you want to do some good to some Brāhmaṇa, Vaiṣṇava, or some cow, at that time also some lies may be spoken if it is good for them. And wherever you find that your life is at danger, at that time also, lies should be spoken to protect yourself.’

And if you see that somebody, some Brāhmaṇa or Vaiṣṇava is in danger, is going to be hanged. And if you are a witness, to give witness in the court, but give false witness and protect that Brāhmaṇa and Vaiṣṇava, it's good. So these are the instances where lies should be spoken. So your life is in danger now. So you should speak lie. Say no, I said yes, then I say no. There's no harm in it.‘ Śukrācārya said like that.

But Bali Mahārāja thought of, ‘No, it is not good.’ So Bali Mahārāja thought of, ‘If He is Bhagavān Viṣṇu, Śukrācārya says He is Bhagavān Viṣṇu. If He is Bhagavān Viṣṇu.’ And Śukrācārya says, ‘Alright, that Bhagavān Viṣṇu has already killed, do you know? Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu, up in your dynasty they had. Your father is Virocana. Virocana's father is Prahlāda. Prahlāda's father Hiraṇyakaśipu. Hiraṇyakaśipu brother is Hiraṇyākṣa. That Viṣṇu had already killed this Hiraṇyākṣa, Hiraṇyakaśipu. You should understand, He is that Viṣṇu had come to you.’ He had already said that, all these things.

But Bali Mahārāja thought of, ‘Whatever it may be, if this Bhagavān Viṣṇu has come and He is begging from me, why shouldn't I give Him? Thereby I will be so famous. I will be so famous. All my fame will be there eternally, that I have given charity to Bhagavān Viṣṇu and have satisfied Him. If He takes away everything from me, it is very good. It is all good to me. Let Him take everything. But I won't speak lies. I cannot accept the instruction of my guru.’

So he left that guru. Bali left such guru. He is not a bona fide person to be guru, one who creates such hindrances in the service of Bhagavān Viṣṇu. That is the instance when a guru should be rejected. Such a guru should be rejected. This is the instance there. Bali rejected the guru.

Then Śukrācārya became very angry. ‘You are my disciple and you are now disobeying me, not accepting my instructions. Huh? You are thinking yourself very wise, all-knowing? Learned? You rascal. You have become so puffed up? So I curse you.’ So he cursed. ‘I curse you! Without much delay, you will be devoid of all your wealth, name, fame, prestige, auspiciousness. Everything, you will be devoid of.’

And he accepted this curse with glad. Bali Mahārāja was not disturbed at all, though he was cursed by his guru. Then he washed the feet of Vāmanadev, offered worship and at that time, his wife, Vindhyāvali, came with a golden loṭā filled with water. And washed the feet of Vāmanadev. So Bali Mahārāja, Vindhyāvali, his wife accepted that feet-washing water of Vāmanadev, put that water on their head.

At that time, Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, Siddhas, cāraṇas became very much delighted and they showered flower from the heaven on Bali Mahārāja. So he did right thing. They understand at the glorified Bali Mahārāja. So after that, Bali Mahārāja now prepared, became prepared to give three pieces of land to Vāmanadev. Up to what point have sanskrit spoken? Huh?

Three pieces of land. He prepared to give. Mm.

So at that time, Vāmanadev expanded Himself. Expanded Himself unlimitedly. That means He manifested His universal form. And in that body everything was there. All the creatures of the world, all devatās, demigods, human beings, hills, mountains, oceans, seas. Everything was there. Śārṅga-dhanu was there, Sudarśana-cakra was there. Everything was there.

Then with one space one space, He covered the whole land spaces, whole land spaces in the universe. Then with the second foot He covered whole, the outer space. And that foot increased and increased and increased. Went up and up and up and up and penetrated. What are those things? The layers. Eight layers. Of the material universe. Penetrated those eight layers. Pṛthvī, Jala, Agni, Vāyu, Ākāśa, Ahaṅkāra, Mahat-tattva, Prakṛti eight layers. Penetrated, penetrated, penetrated. Increased, increased and penetrated and touched the Kāraṇa-sāgara, causal ocean.

So when that foot was increasing and going up and up and up, when it reached the planet of Brahmā – Satyaloka. So Brahmā and all the rishis headed by Marīci came, offered prayers, and washed that feet of the Lord, and also offered pūjā. Ṛkṣaraj Jāmbavān at that time blew trumpet. And glorified the Lord. Mm.

So when the followers of Bali, all demons saw that Bali has lost everything now, he had nothing now, then the demons became angry and started to fight against the Lord. But Bali debarred them. ‘No, don't get angry. Don't fight.’ Bali ordered them, ‘Go and take shelter in Sutala.’ So all his follower demons, they went into Pātāla, Sutala.

At that time, Garuḍa appeared by the will of the Lord and bound up Bali with varuṇa-pāśa. Bound up. Still Bali remained undisturbed. Then, Vāmanadeva said then, ‘Where is the space? Now I will put My third foot. Give Me place.’

And there was nothing with the Bali now. Everything was taken up. Then Bali thought of, ‘How can I keep up my words? If I won't keep up my words, then I'll be condemned and I will go to hell, and my dynasty, all my father, grandfather and his father, his father, so glorious persons.’ Then Bali said, ‘All right, I must keep up my word. I must keep up. You should not think that I will be a liar.’ Then Bali said this thing:

yady uttamaśloka bhavān mameritaṁ
vaco vyalīkaṁ sura-varya manyate karomy ṛtaṁ tan na bhavet pralambhanaṁ padaṁ tṛtīyaṁ kuru śīrṣṇi me nijam [SB 8.22.2]

Bali Mahārāja said, ‘O Uttama-śloka, O Bhagavān, O Lord, who is glorified with choicest poetry. This Uttama-śloka, You should not think that I will be a liar, I cannot keep up my words. I must keep up my words. Please listen to me. I am not a liar. Please put Your third step on my head.’

Bali showed this example, that when he became completely surrendered himself unto the lotus feet of the Lord. This is ātma-nivedana. Navadhā Bhakti ātma-nivedanam. So he showed the example of ātma-nivedana, therefore Bali became one of the twelve Mahājanas. Bali became one of the twelve Mahājanas, because he showed this example of ātma-nivedana, how one completely surrender unto the Supreme Lord giving up everything.

Those who are really sadhus, they give up all their material wealth, their wife, their children, their kith and kin and family members, all their material wealth, thinking that all these things will be taken away by his family members those who are like plunderers. svajanākhya-dasyu. Those who are plunderers in the name of kith and kin and relatives, but really they are plunderers. Why they will take all these things? Let it all be given to the Lord. The sadhus do like this. And they completely surrender unto, giving up all these things completely surrender unto Supreme Lord. And Bali did it. This is the really sadhu's activity, Mahājana's activity. So Bali became a Mahājana.

After that, Bali's wife Vindhyāvali and Brahmā, Prahlāda also came at that time, appeared at that time. He offered prayers unto Lord Vāmanadev and said, ‘You have showed causeless mercy unto this, my grandson, Bali. You have taken away all his material wealth, everything. Thereby You have shown this causeless mercy unto him. Because all this material, yes, that is Your mercy.’

And Brahmā and Prahlāda, Brahmā and Bali's wife Vindhyāvali, all of them offered prayers unto Bhagavān Vāmanadev and requested Him, ‘Please make Bali free from this bondage.’ Because Bali was bound up with the varuṇa-pāśa. So all of them offered prayer and requested Bhagavān to free him from that bondage. Lord Vāmanadev became very much pleased with the prayers of these devotees. Then Bali was pushed down, then put His foot on the head of Bali and pushed him down to Sutala, vīla-svarga. That is one of the heavenly planets in nether, nether planet, heavenly planet. All opulence’s were there. And Vāmanadev praised Bali, glorified Bali, and said, ‘This all-material assets, wealth, opulence, it will be given to a non-devotee. It will be given to a non-devotee; it will become all sorts of anartha on his part, because he will never utilize it in the service of the Lord, so he will utilize in all sinful activities. So he will become a great sinful person and go to hell and suffer there. So if Supreme Lord really showers His mercy unto someone, He takes away all these material assets, wealth from him, and makes him dīna pauper. That is His mercy. Then he will completely take shelter of the Supreme Lord. All his materialistic desires will be completely destroyed.’

So at that time, the opulence, whatever opulence will come to him, that has directly come from the Supreme Lord, and he will utilize it, everything, now for the service of the Lord, not for his own pleasure and enjoyment. Otherwise, these materials, opulence’s will be the cause of all sorts of anartha on the part of the non-devotee.’ That Supreme Lord, Vāmanadev says.

So Vāmanadev took out everything from Bali. That is His mercy. And return, He gave. Bali was not at all in a loss, you see. Bali got, you think of what Bali got. Bali got so much opulence. And Bali had the desire, therefore he was performing that horse sacrifice to become Indra. Because demon, demon had some desire. And he also, that was also fulfilled.

All heavenly opulence, the demigods are enjoying, and Bali enjoyed that thing. Vāmanadev gave him, He was like, ‘Go to that nether heavenly planet is vīla-svarga, and enjoy all opulence. My Sudarśana-cakra will protect you, and I Myself will be the gatekeeper, and protect all your assets. Nobody will come to take share of it.’

So what he got, you think of. Is there any loss to him? No loss at all. He got so much, isn't it? And other millennium, manvantara, in other manvantara, he will become Indra. Yes, he will become Indra. That desire was also fulfilled. Bali will become Indra in other manvantara. After this manvantara, he will become, Vāmanadev said. And he became Indra also.

And Bali became Mahājana by completely dedicating himself, doing ātma-nivedana, completely showing the example of ātma-nivedana. Thereby, he bound up the Lord with love, prema. One who really develops such prema, he does real ātma-nivedana. Otherwise, nobody can do such ātma-nivedana. This is the question of love. Bali developed such love. So, he is one of the twelve Mahājanas. This is the transcendental pastime of Lord Vāmanadev.

Jaya Vāmanadev kī jaya! Jaya Vāmanadev kī śubha āvirbhāva-tithi kī jaya! Samaveta bhakta-vṛnda kī jaya! All glory to Śrīla Prabhupāda. All glory to assembled devotees.

Devotee: Guru Mahārāja kī Jaya!

Devotee: Gurudeva. That's what convinced me to join the movement.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes.

Devotee: Because the temple president he was preaching to me, and he kept saying, ‘You should surrender everything just like Bali Mahārāja has surrendered.’

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Bali Mahārāja, yes, what he got. What he got?

Devotee: Yes.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: He didn't suffer any loss.

Devotee: No opulence than him.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: He got more, much more, much more.

Devotee: And there's no, practically on that planet - there's no influence of death.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes. No influence of death. Yes. He was protected, you see? Bali Mahārāja, Vāmanadev, ‘My Sudarśana-cakra will protect. I'll become gatekeeper. Nobody will come and take share.’

Devotee: Yeah.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: So, who gets such thing? If you dedicate whatever you have got, everything, complete, dedicate yourself.

That is the example he set up. That's Mahājana. Therefore, he is called Mahājana, one of the twelve Mahājana’s. That means develops a love towards the lord. So he bound up the Lord with love.

Devotee: What is the meaning of prema?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Prema means love. In English we say love, we say prema.

Devotee: The highest thing.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Highest thing. Yes. Unless you develop such prema, you cannot do this ātma-nivedana. No question at all. Therefore, we stress on it, this prema. Otherwise, you won't, you can't do ātma-nivedana. No. It will be artificial or partial or conditional.

Devotee: Yes.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Not real. Definitely. This is teaching here. In this Vamana episode. This ātma-nivedana.

Devotee: He already had this prema, to give like this?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes. Because he was born in such dynasty, grandson of Prahlāda Mahārāja.

Devotee: Yes. The Lord is glorifying him.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes. The Lord glorified him. And even Nṛsiṃhadev has already said to Prahlāda Mahārāja twenty-one dynasties, tri-sapta-puruṣa. ‘All will be delivered, because of this bhakti of Prahlāda Mahārāja. So, that takes place.

Devotee: Kaśyapa Muni and Diti were also the parents of Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu. So they were they come up many times.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: They, they were killed by Lord Himself, you see?

Devotee: They're also great.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: They're also great. They are killed by Lord Himself. They developed enmity towards the Lord.

Devotee: Yes.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Therefore, they were killed by Lord. And when Prahlāda appeared and Prahlāda's bhakti, all of them, they can liberate it and went, go back home, back to Godhead.

That's Prahlāda. Due to Prahlāda's bhakti, and that Nṛsiṃhadeva has already said trisaptaḥ, three into seven. trisaptaḥ, three into seven, that means twenty-one forefathers that will come in your dynasty, all will be delivered. You see? That Nṛsiṃhadeva already said, Prahlāda.

Devotee: Kaśyapa Muni and Diti were the, the parents of Viṣṇu's tattva, Vāmanadeva.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Vāmanadev, yes.

Devotee: And also, they were the parents of these great demons as well. What is their position? Are they like?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: No, no, no. Aditi, Kaśyapa and Aditi. Aditi was parents of Vāmanadev, but Kaśyapa and Diti are the, diti-putrā daityāḥ. The sons of Diti are demons.

Devotee: Mm-hmm.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: But sons of Aditi are āditya - demigods.

Devotee: Demigods. Oh.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes.

Devotee: Two different, different wives.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Two, two, two.

Devotee: Mm-hmm.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yeah. Kaśyapa is the Prajāpati.

Devotee: Yes.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Prajāpati, one of the Prajāpatis. And Kaśyapa had many wives. Many wives. Kaśyapa had one of the wives, Kadrū. Kadrū. And her sons are snakes. And Kaśyapa..

Devotee: They worship here in Orissa. Kadrū?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: No.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Vinatā. Another wife is Vinatā and her son is Garuḍa.

Devotee: Oh, Garuḍa.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: All are Kaśyapas. He's Prajāpati and many wives. Diti, Aditi. Diti sons are daityas. Demons. Aditi sons are demigods. Ādityas. And that is reference. You take the reference, that's why Vāmanadev appeared, because now He will take out everything from this body, what Śukrācārya says He'll give it all to Indra. Yes, Indra. Indra is the son of Aditi also.

Devotee: Yes.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Indra is son of Aditi. Because prior to that, demigods were defeated by the demons.

Devotee: Yes.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: And all the demons have taken away all the opulence of the demigods.

Devotee: Yes. Because Bali was such good disciple.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Because Bali was so powerful.

Devotee: Yeah.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: So, Aditi prayed to God to get such a son who will bring back this thing to Indra. And Śukrācārya said that thing, ‘Don't give. He'll take out everything from you and give it to Indra.’ That was the reference, you see? In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam you'll find this thing. So this is the day - appearance day of Vāmanadev, transcendental līlā’s.

Devotee: It's very amazing how Kṛṣṇa has this desire.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes.

Devotee: He comes in so many wonderful?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Wonderful incarnations. Yes.

Devotee: Unimaginable.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes. We cannot imagine. We can't figure. We cannot conceive.

Devotee: Inconceivable.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Inconceivable. Yes.

Devotee: And very humorous.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: So nice, so nice stories, transcendental pastimes. You can relish. One devotee will relish it. He will relish. Nice stories.

Devotee: You spoke about when Kṛṣṇa came as Nṛsiṃhadev, He had desires to, you spoke about the different incarnations, why Kṛṣṇa came. Like, 'cause when he was Nṛsiṃhadev he had blood on his lap.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Oh. Great, great, great.

Devotee: He desired to have a father. And then he came as Vāmanadev? Was?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yeah. After that, all incarnations. Came accepting father and mother. Nṛsiṃha then came out from the pillar. So, His father and mother is pillar. Stone pillar. Prahlāda Mahārāja sat on His lap, so Prahlāda Mahārāja got some pleasure and happiness, and Nṛsiṃhadev also. But pleasure of Prahlāda was superior and more than that. So, Nṛsiṃhadev could think of, ‘How can I enjoy such pleasure if I can sit on the lap of my father and mother, but my father and mother is a stone pillar?’ I cannot see it. So He develops such greed. This question of lobha, greed. So then after that, whatever incarnations came, they came accepting father and mother.

Devotee: And you spoke of it in a progressive way, like when Kṛṣṇa came as, Rāma, He decided to..

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes, in progressive way that Rāma, then Kṛṣṇa, then at last Mahāprabhu.

Devotee: Was Vāmanadev in that progression?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes, all incarnation. After that whatever incarnation came, they came accepting father and mother after Nṛsiṃhadev.

Devotee: What was the next incarnation after Vāmanadev? Vāmanadev came after?

Gour Govinda Swāmī: You see first canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Sukadev Gosvāmī has given some of the, some. Innumerable incarnations, but some he has given. First canto. So in that progressive way I was speaking about the greed, lobha.

Then when Rāma, Lord Rāma came, He was Maryada Puruṣottama. He had one wife. But when the rishis in Daṇḍakāraṇya thought of seeing the beautiful form of Rāma, they developed such mood in there that, ‘I will become wives of such all-beautiful looking Lord.’ That thought there. Serious desire.

Lord Rāma said, ‘No, you, you cannot. Not in this incarnation.’ You see. ‘Next incarnation. This incarnation I have vowed, I have taken this vow, accept one wife, not more than that. If you accept Me as your husband, then you'll all be cursed by Sītā Devī and you'll be burnt into ashes. Don't do it. Wait for the next incarnation.’

So at that time, Lord Rāma had that greed, He developed. How to relish parakīyā-rasa? parakīyā bhāve jahā prachāra. That song is there. That is parakīyā. svakīyā means one wedded wives.

Devotee: It means lawless.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Mm-hmm. Yes.

Devotee: It says lawlessness.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Yes. That's what Prabhupāda says.

Devotee: Paramour love.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Huh?

Devotee: Paramour.

Gour Govinda Swāmī: Paramour, yes. Parakīyā-rasa. How can I relish that mellow parakīyā-rasa? That greed developed into Rāma. But Lord Rāma in that incarnation couldn't do so because He had taken that vow. So in Kṛṣṇa incarnation, that was fulfilled. Parakīyā-rasa, gopi, because outwardly externally gopis are the wives, they had their husbands, they have some other persons but Kṛṣṇa is their real husband. Gopīnātha, Gopīkānta, isn't it? But that's parakīyā-rasa, the highest.

Anyhow. But again that greed was there, that we are now discussing Caitanya-caritāmṛta, that remain unfulfilled in Kṛṣṇa-līlā. rādhāyā-praṇaya- vikriti. Three things. What is the love of Rādhārāṇī? kīdṛśo vā. What is My beauty? sva-madhuryah, that Rādhārāṇī is relishing and enjoying, how I can relish it? Second desire. Third, by relishing My own, My beauty Rādhārāṇī gets one pleasure, pleasure and happiness and what is that? saukhya. How I can get it?

These three desires remained unfulfilled. So He developed that lobha, greed. saci-garbha-sindhu-harīndu. śrī-rādhāyāḥ praṇaya-mahimā kīdṛśo vānayaivā saukhyaṁ cāsyā mad-anubhavataḥ kīdṛśaṁ veti lobhāt [CC Ādi 1.6]

This lobhā word is there. Lobha means greed, veti lobhāt tad-bhāvāḍhyaḥ samajani śacī-garbha-sindhau harīnduḥ. To fulfill this greed, three desires, that Lord Hari came out from the womb of Śacī Mātā. As the sun. Indu, indu means moon. navadvīpa-candra Nadiyā-cānda. The moon of Navadvīpa Dhāma. Nadiyā-cānda. cānda means moon. And Mahāprabhu is known as Nadiyā-cānda, the moon, the moon of Nadiyā.

And generally, the moon comes out from the ocean. Ocean. Ocean, oceans. In the horizon you will see ocean is there. The moon, when moon rises, full moon, it comes out from the ocean. So we say that ocean is the father of Lakṣmī Devī, isn't it? Lakṣmī Devī appeared from milk ocean. The ocean is the father of Lakṣmī Devī. And moon also came from milk ocean, children of milk ocean. So moon is also son of that ocean. The moon's father is also the ocean.

So Lakṣmī Devī and the moon are brother and sister. The same mother. Huh? Brother and sister. And we accept Lakṣmī Devī as our mother. So mother's brother is our maternal uncle, so moon is our maternal uncle. Therefore, we say it is here in our India, proverb. Proverb like this cānda māmā, o cānda māmu . O maternal uncle, moon. We call like this cānda māmā, cānda māmu. Māmu is the maternal uncle. That moon is the maternal uncle of all the living entities, in this world. Because he is brother of Mother Lakṣmī. Lakṣmī is the mother of our mothers. Lakṣmī māta. Mother.

Because they are born from the ocean. So that word is there, sindhu. Sindhu means ocean. śacī-garbha-sindhu-harindu. Indu means moon, sindhu means ocean. This Sanskrit you should understand, then you can relish this verse. Sindh-indu. śacī-garbha-sindhu. Garbha means womb. Śacī-garbha, the womb of Śacī Mātā is like an ocean. And this Mahāprabhu is like moon, indu. So that indu moon Mahāprabhu came out from the womb-like ocean of Śacī Mātā. Ocean like womb of Śacī Mātā. Is that verse, that words are used like that.

śacī-garbha-sindhau harinduḥ. Here, sindhu means ocean, indu means moon. garbha means womb, śacī-garbha-sindhau. Womb of Śacī Mātā is compared to an ocean. That moon, Nadiyā-cānda, Mahāprabhu, Lord Hari came out as a moon from that ocean to fulfill this greed, three desires. lobha. That is the progression and ultimate attainment. So therefore, the incarnation of Gaurāṅga, the highest and complete food, no deficit is there. All the desires are fulfilled; all the greed is fulfilled. No further greed is there. But in all incarnation there is some greed is there, remained unfulfilled. Whereas in Mahāprabhu incarnation, no greed is there. He has everything fulfilled. Yes.

Devotee: Haribol. Haribol. Jaya Gurudeva
