There is a story. A grandmother sometimes tells her grandchildren some stories. Small children are very fond of hearing stories, so they request, "O grandmother, please tell us a story," and so the grandmother says. Once there was a prince. He went to the forest to hunt. While hunting and wandering in the forest, he saw a witch. Witches have the power to change their bodies. She was an old witch but became a very beautiful maiden. So, the king's son, the prince, became attracted to her. "O beautiful young lady, I have to enjoy her." He thought like this, and that young witch also became attracted to the young prince. The attraction between a man and a woman is natural. But she was a witch in the guise of a young woman. She took the prince to her house, which was a fortress, and because she was very expert in witchcraft, she turned the young prince into a black goat and kept him bound up in her prison house. The whole day the young prince was a black goat bound up. In the night, the witch would turn that goat into a young prince again and say, "Alright, now let us enjoy." In this way, the witches are trained.
Now, the king's son, who is the country's administrator and ruler, was imprisoned by this old witch. Thus he became a black goat and suffered. The result of desiring to enjoy that old witch Māyā is that the soul, the living entity, becomes imprisoned and forgetful of who he is. This is the result, and māyā is the witch.
When that young prince became a black goat, he forgot he was a prince. Someone came from his father's palace and recognized the prince, "Oh, do you know who you are? Have you forgotten your identity? You are the prince, the son of a king! Why have you become a black goat, suffering, don't you know? I know you! You are the son of our emperor, king. Now you have become a black goat here. What is this nonsense? Get out of here and go back to your father's house!"
The king worries for his son, thinking, "Oh, my son is not in the palace. He must be suffering outside." The king is thinking of him because he loves him. So, the king sends his special minister: you go, find my son, and bring him back. The minister searches in the jungle and finds the prince has become a black goat by the witch. He has forgotten his real identity and, as a result, is suffering. In this way, māyā, as a witch, has made all the conditioned souls here prisoners. So, the pure devotees come here to teach such souls, "Oh, you have forgotten who you are!"
