Similar is this material existence in which you suffer but also in which you get some pleasure. So sukha duḥkha, there is some material pleasure, the consequence of which is suffering. Ye hi saṁsparśa-jā bhogā duḥkha-yonaya eva te ādy-antavantaḥ kaunteya na teṣu ramate budhaḥ [Bg. 5.22]. In the Bhagavad gītā, Lord Kṛṣṇa says to Arjuna, "O Kaunteya, O son of Kunti, na teṣu ramate budhaḥ, a budhaḥ, a wise man, an intelligent person is not interested in this material life because the consequence of this material existence is duḥkha. This place is full of misery, duḥkha-yonaya eva te.
The material nature is very, very enchanting, prakṛtiṁ mohinīṁ śritāḥ [Bg. 9.12]. It is stated in Śrīmad Bhagavad gītā, prakṛtiṁ mohinīṁ śritāḥ. Prakṛti means material nature, and mohinī means very enchanting. "You come to my lap, come to my lap." She assumes the form of a beautiful maiden with a nice flower garland in her hand, inviting you. "Come, come, come! I will put this nice garland around your neck, and you enjoy me, enjoy me." This is the enchantment of māyā. This is the enchantment of this material nature.
Our beloved spiritual master, Śrīla Prabhupāda, has given a very nice illustration in the Gītā book. Have you seen that? There are so many steps leading to Kṛṣṇa, all beautiful Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa. The spiritual master directs the souls towards Kṛṣṇa. He is calling the conditioned souls or lifting the conditioned souls from this deep dark well of material existence and leading them up to Kṛṣṇa. So, this beautiful Kṛṣṇa, you belong to Him. You are an eternal part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is your supreme father, and you are His son, child. Please come to Him, who is all blissful, all pleasurable. He is saccidānanda vigraha: eternal, full of knowledge, and blissful; there is no question of distress or misery. You, please come.
The conditioned soul, by the instruction of such a sādhu or guru, looks at Kṛṣṇa, then on the back side māyā is there enchanting with a nice flower garland, a very beautiful maiden young girl, "Oh please look at me, come, come." The conditioned soul is looking at her and again looking at Kṛṣṇa! Where to go? Where to go? Go there or go there? Are you in such a state? When your spiritual master is directing towards Kṛṣṇa, you are looking at Kṛṣṇa then māyā is calling, "Come, come, come. Come to my lap, come to my lap." Looking at Kṛṣṇa and then again looking at māyā, you can't decide where to go. If you have purified intelligence by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by the grace of the spiritual master, then you can kick out māyā, "Get out of here, I will go there." Then you can kick māyā. Mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. Kṛṣṇa has said this in Bhagavad gītā. The wandering spirit soul can get out of māyā by Kṛṣṇa and guru's kṛpa; both are required.
